If you’re feeling nervous at the prospect of undergoing dental treatment, don’t be! Dental practices are nowadays very accommodating places which try extremely hard to ensure you feel as comfortable as possible throughout any procedure.

Feelings of anxiety can be overwhelming if you have a dental phobia Dublin, but it’s possible to overcome this and feel relaxed when you sit in the dental chair. By using dentalsedation, you will feel calm enough to undergo dental treatment and it’s possible for your dentist to fit in several dental procedures in the one appointment. Thanks to dental sedation, you don’t have to miss regular dental check-ups, ensuring that your mouth and teeth remain healthy.

One form of dental sedation is the intravenous injection (IV) of Midazolam which is administered into the back of the hand or into your arm. This method is the most popular with our anxious patients here at Portobello Dental Clinic.

When the sedative starts to take effect, you will feel drowsy and relaxed, yet you will still be somewhat aware of what’s going on around you. This is ideal as you will be able to understand what the dentist is telling you and respond accordingly. The benefit is that you don’t feel any anxiety while you receive dental treatment, and you may have no recollection of any of the treatment afterwards, yet having been fully conscious through it all! So it carries the benefits of amnesia without the risks of a general anaesthetic. It is also very useful where patients have a strong gag reflex.

After the dental procedures are complete, you will still be under the effects of sedation, so you will feel very relaxed, and will probably have no memory of the visit, and it will feel like no time has passed. It’s a bit like waking up from a restful sleep and you won’t feel any pain, discomfort or fear. Due to feeling so relaxed, you will be required to bring a friend or family member with you who can accompany you home and look after you for a few hours as your judgement and reflexes are affected.

There are plenty of benefits to sedation dentistry Dublin and this makes it an ideal choice for people who have a strong gag reflex, those who have sensitive teeth, difficulty getting numb, complex dental problems or a severe dental phobia.

At Portobello Dental Clinic, all our Dublin dentist  have post graduate training in this field, and strictly comply with current Dental Council guidelines and regulations.  If you would like to book an appointment please call 01 454 2022.
