Georgina came to us in the Spring of last year not happy with her smile but more importantly with a fear of the dentist and dental treatment.
After a thorough examination we decided that 6 month smiles braces would be the best way to give Georgina the smile she wanted. However Georgina did need a little bit of dental treatment first to improve her dental health.
Due to her fear of the dentist Georgina elected to get this work done under sedation which we call ‘Twilight Sedation’. This is not a general anaesthetic but an intravenous sedation, patients are alert and can respond to the dentist but it does make them sleepy and a lot of patients do in fact fall asleep. This is also very good as patients don’t remember the visit.
This worked very well for Georgina and she was able to get all the necessary dental treatment completed in one appointment, making the experience much easier and more comfortable for her.In the summer, once Georgina had become more comfortable in the dental chair, we started work on improving Georgina’s smile with 6 month smiles….
Before we started we asked Georgina some questions and these are her words on how she was feeling:
I found out about Portobello Dental whilst researching dentists who provide sedation. I have always been terrified of dentists, and so as a result I’ve visited over 10 different clinics in the last few years to try and find one I felt comfortable with, but have had no luck. Once I found that they provided twilight sedation I just had to give them a call. As I hadn’t properly been to a dentist in years, I had lots of work to be done, fillings, extractions, orthodontic work. The girls at reception are so helpful and so understanding of nervous patients, even over the phone they put me totally at ease. The main factor that attracted me to the twilight sedation was the fact that I would still be aware of what was going on around me.
The day of my first appointment I was so nervous even about going into the clinic. But once I met Dr. Madeley I started to relax. All he did was check my teeth and what work needed doing, even this was a big step for me. So I made an appointment to come back and have most of the work done under sedation. At the next appointment I was a lot calmer as I knew exactly what was going to be done and felt comfortable that Dr. Madeley was doing it all. Dr. Beirne put the I.V in my hand and within minutes Dr. Madeley got to work. It was a strange feeling as I knew exactly what was going on but couldn’t care less! My Dad brought me home. I went to bed and when I woke up I couldn’t remember anything after sitting in the chair, it was amazing! I’d definitely rate the whole experience 10/10, the staff, the procedure, everything! They even ring you the next day to make sure everything is ok. Over the past year I have become more and more relaxed about going to the dentist.

Finished! Great result!
Georgina was obviously delighted with the transformation, which occurred without the need to extract any teeth for orthodontic purposes.
It was a great case for us too, not only to give this patient more confidence in coming to the dentist, but more importantly more confidence in her smile!
6 Month Smiles
For years I’ve always wanted straight teeth, but being afraid of the dentist has always been a factor that has put me off getting any orthodontic work done. After having all my dental work done by Dr. Madeley, I decided the next step was to get my teeth straight! He informed about “6 Month Smiles “and how they work. The major factors that were important to me were how much it would cost, how long would I have them on, the appearance of the braces and how comfortable they would be. 6 Month Smiles ticked all the boxes. I was told that because I had so much overcrowding, it may take longer than the 6 months to fix them, but that didn’t bother me. So I had all the impressions taken of my teeth (this can be quite worrying as at times it feels like you’re choking but you’re not!) A word of warning, don’t wear make-up to this appointment as half of it will be missing by the end of it!
Three weeks later I went in to get my braces on. I was so excited as I had waited so long to fix my teeth. Getting the braces on was no problem, just very long and a bit boring. I remember the smell of the bonding material was quite horrible, it kind of smelt like nail varnish remover. When it was all over I couldn’t believe I had them on. It did take a while to get used to them.
The first few days were very uncomfortable, but taking neurofen really helped. It was also quite difficult getting used to the brackets as they rub on your lips and cheeks and can be sore, but the wax is great! It takes a while to get used to eating with them on, especially in the first month. I found that eating things like soup, yoghurts and soft bread was the best thing to do. I got them tightened then every 4 weeks and for the first few months this was quite painful during the procedure and for a few days after, but it became easier as my teeth started to settle. I found that the greatest amount of movement took place in the first few months, everyone notice a huge difference. Even with the braces on I was becoming more and more confident and smiling more often. I did have to clean them pretty much after every meal as the tiny elastics became discoloured after about 2 weeks, but these were changed at each appointment. I had my braces on for a total of 7 months and finally got them off in January and my teeth look AMAZING! Words can’t describe how pleased I am with the end result, I just can’t stop smiling. Everyone comments on how much I smile now without covering my mouth with my hand or my sleeve. I just wish I’d done this sooner. I’ve always worked with the public and it’s so nice now to smile without subconsciously knowing that people are staring at my teeth.
And Georgina took her make over one step further changing her hair completely to show off her new smile, we think she looks great.
