If you have a cavity, a filling is necessary to prevent further tooth decay. Fillings are placed by your dentist and can be made from a variety of different filling materials. Traditional materials include amalgam, white composite, gold, ceramic or glass ionomer materials.

Fillings are used to restore the function and appearance of your tooth so you can use it as normal. White composite fillings are increasingly becoming popular as they are a mixture of glass, quartz, silica and resin which match the colour of your natural teeth. This can improve the appearance of your smile, and no one can tell that you have any fillings.

They also chemically bond (stick) to your teeth adding strength to weakened teeth. Traditionally, dental amalgam was used as the filling material of choice, but its drawback was its unattractive metal-grey appearance. The science behind white fillings has advanced a great deal in the past few years, making them more durable and hard-wearing.

The use of dental amalgam, which contains a small amount of mercury, will be phased out over the next few years due to the negative impact of mercury on the environment. This means that dental filling materials such as white composite, glass ionomer and ceramic will become the materials of choice for cavities. Another benefit of materials such as glass ionomer cement is that it releases Fluoride into the tooth, providing the patient with added oral health benefits.

If you would like to have your existing amalgam fillings removed, a dentist can now replace them using white composite material instead. Once removed, the new filling material is then bonded onto the tooth using an ultraviolet light which hardens it in place. The material is then trimmed and shaped to match the rest of the tooth’s surface, giving your restored teeth a more natural appearance.
