Portobello Dental Clinic Charity Day September 07, 2013.
This year, further to our success in hosting the charity day on July 7th 2012 in aid of the “Make a Wish Foundation”, and our subsequent award for the best charity project by Irish Dentistry, the atmosphere seemed a little different though—instead of focusing on the January blues, we all admitted to feeling proud of last years event, and very fortunate indeed to have few complaints in the larger scheme of things. When it was suggested that we consider repeating the charity day, we were really impressed by how enthusiastically the suggestion was again received by the entire team. This was the turning point of that meeting, when things became a little fraught as there are so many charities, all worthy, and how does one choose???
Each person had their own idea, and with justifiable reasons about which charity to support… Will it be Cancer care? Our local hospice? The homeless? It seemed an impossible task to pick “the most worthy cause”. There was only one way to do this, so we put it to a team vote.
In the end we chose the “Laura Lynn House” because of their focus on children.
“Laura Lynn”, Ireland’s First Children’s Hospice opened in September 2011 to provide assistance and care to the over 1,400 children in Ireland with life limiting conditions.
Aside from the care provided, there is a limited paediatric palliative care program available for families.
For parents, it gives that much needed break – often as simple as a decent night’s sleep. It also supports healthy siblings, who are very much left out, when a sick child needs 24-hour care. It will offer families a choice when the end comes and ongoing support for the family when the child has passed on, for as long as they choose, which is hugely important, as life can never be the same again. Home Care is also a huge part of the service, as is linking with other organisations working in similar areas.
So with much excitement at a decision made, a format was agreed upon, and the foundation contacted. Inevitably, choosing a day that suited everybody actually proved more difficult than choosing the charity itself, but eventually, “D-Day” was agreed and set for Saturday 7th September, 2013.
We devoted an entire day to the cause, offering hygiene treatments to new and existing patients. All material costs were covered by the practice, and every team member generously agreed to give up their time on the day.
In conjunction with this, we asked local businesses to offer prizes for our raffle and many were kindly donated.
Patients were encouraged to donate the full value of the treatments received to the “Laura Lynn House” once completed. We sported our blue “Laura Lynn House” t-shirts, festooned the practice with “Laura Lynn” balloons and paraphernalia. Everybody got into the spirit of it, in some cases patients donated considerably more that the nominal value of the treatment.
Overall it was a great success and we raised €2335 for the Laura Lynn Foundation
